Cartwheel

As I was watching a "show" put on by my friend's children, I noticed that one of them did a cartwheel starting with the left hand. I am right handed and have always done my cartwheel (when I did them) starting with my right hand. "Oh, she must be left-handed?" "She is right-handed" was the answer. I stated clearly she was starting with her left hand and her mom stated that she always did her cartwheels with her left and she was right handed. Weird, I surely can't do a cartwheel starting on my left, very awkward. I dare you to try it. I did, not very successfully. Good thing, I did in the privacy of my home.

Just the thought of it makes me feel like I'd fall on my head!

It is a weird thing, but as a gymnastics coach and former gymnast I can tell you that which way you do your cartwheel has nothing to do with which hand you write with. People are actually right or left footed too - so what counts with the cartwheel is which foot you have in front. A lot of times with really young kids who are learning cartwheels but don't know which foot or hand to start with we tell them to turn in a circle and which ever direction they turn in is almost always the foot and hand they will use for their cartwheel. For the record, I am a right handed writer and a left footed/handed cartwheeler although I CAN do them on both hands. hahahahahah - ya gotta be good a something right ?! :D ;)

I too am right handed, but I start with my left hand for a cartwheel! I noticed that also about my neighbors kid and then I realized that maybe I was doing it wrong?! Is there a wrong way?

Interesting Heather. I am the guilty friend here Rachel is talking about. I have to say that I turn to the right when I turn in a circle, and so does Olivia. But, we are 'left footed' I guess. Oh whatever, I know I'm just 'amphibious' :) So great to see you the other day Rachel. Can't wait til the next time. But, I vote no kids and Goodberrys!

My daughter is right handed and can do cartwheels in both directions - it got her a part in The Nutcracker! All the children who hid under Mother Ginger's skirt had to be able to do cartwheels in both directions. :)
